PADI’s online Open Water Course – study privately then dive in a group

PADI now offers Open Water students the opportunity to complete the theory and knowledge elements of the course online. Once you’ve finished, you will proceed to confined water and open water training with a dive shop or resort of your choosing – BUT – it’s a choice that you must pre-designate prior to starting the online course. When registering for the online course, you will be presented with a list of shops to choose from. You will pay PADI US$ 120 for this e-learning option, a portion of which will be paid out to the dive shop you pre-selected. PADI will keep the majority of the fee.

Coral Reef Diving is not on the pre-selection list -  because we are not a brick-and-mortar dive shop.

Your pre-selected dive shop will charge you their usual Open Water course fee to take the training dives, which may or may not be discounted to reflect the price you paid for the e-learning option. In many instances, students will end up paying twice for the theory and knowledge portion of the course – once to PADI and once to the dive shop. If you end up owning a printed Open Water manual or a Recreational Dive Planner, then chances are you’ve paid twice.

You have the right to take the course online and switch to us for the diving. Here’s how to do it:

You, the student diver, are not obligated to complete your training dives with the designated dive shop. You are free at any time to ask the shop for a “referral” - and take your business elsewhere. No questions asked, no excuses needed.  A referral form is, in fact, your student file, containing the information indicating your progress through the course. You have paid for this student file and you own it.

We suggest that you do the online course, but before you pay the dive shop for the training dives, get your referral and come dive with us!

Our Offer to you

• To online Open Water students: we will discount the Proper Introduction to Diving course by $100 when you bring your referral to us.
• To other Open Water students who just want to switch instructors: our fees to finish the course are negotiable, depending on how much of the course remains to be completed.
